They lived in London as the title suggests around the 18th century so the myth goes.  The general consensus is that the story is a myth but some people claim that it is a true story.

It is a terrifying storyline indeed which made it that much more captivating to those audiences that watched the movie. So now that Halloween is approaching, you can use this to your advantage to dress up as one of these characters. This costume is unforgettable the moment you look at it as it is characterized by the Victorian era top with the blue skirt that flares out. This fictional character dates all the way back to the early 1800s. There is much debate about whether the fictional character is based on some truth or is just an urban myth but whatever the case it is a very disturbing tale that fits in well with the creepy theme of Halloween.

The general tale of Sweeney Todd is of a demented barber who takes his psychotic episodes out on his customers. Once they are in his chair, presumably for a haircut or shave, he activates a lever which throws the unsuspecting victim violently backwards where he slits their throats and deposits the body down a chute into the bowels of his shop.

This is grisly enough but were the tale really freaks people out (and I guess stays with them) is that he uses the body as filling for meat pies that are made by is partner Mrs Lovett. The pies are a great hit with the patrons of Mrs Lovett’s pie shop, where good quality meat was probably hard to come by at the time.

The most recent adaption of this tale was brought to the big screen in 2007 by Tim Burton (as a musical based on the Broadway version). Many had never heard of this individual before the movie, but it is a safe bet to say that everyone has been introduced to him now. Although the costume detailed in this post is not based on the film version costume, see this Sweeney Todd costume for the Johnny Depp inspired costume.

Even though this Sweeney Todd costume is based on a supposed fictional character, you can’t help but stare in horror at the appearance that someone makes in this outfit. It is so realistic, and based on the film, this is someone that you do not want to take lightly.

When you enter a party in this attire heads will turn and you can feel the air get immediately colder with fear. The outfit includes a white shirt covered by a brown waistcoat. Brown pants and a white apron complete the picture and transform you into the butcher barber.

The officially licensed Sweeney Todd costume from the recent movie, this costume includes a Victorian era black dress featuring a fitted princess line bodice. It has a classic v neckline accented in tulle with attached red chemise, sheer three quarter sleeves with lace cuffs, and a pleated dress-apron skirt which falls just above the ankles.

To complement this outfit, you may need to get your own boots and gloves. You should also look to apply some makeup for that Gothic look too.

The Tales of Old London Mrs. Lovett costume is a more demure look but just think what this wholesome looking outfit is hiding. The costume consists of a Victorian era styled top and light blue skirt. There is also a reversible apron and paniers (underskirt).

Adding a few props to the costume will really take the biscuit. Think about getting a Victorian style wig to look in context. You may also want to get a bonnet and napkin. Don’t forget the meat pie and bloody cleaver for that extra zing of the macabre.

Background to Mrs Lovett

The Sweeney Todd story is generally regarded as a myth (some people claim it to be true though) so the character of Mrs Lovett has changed with various retellings of the grisly tale. In the recent movie musical version directed by Tim Burton, she used to be Sweeney Todd’s landlady before he was unjustly imprisoned. When Todd returns to wreak revenge on the magistrate that imprisoned him and then took his wife, Mrs Lovett is making a crust by..er..making a crust for her patented meat pies.

However the raw materials for her produce are hard to come by and this leads to a collaboration between the landlady and her former tenant. Sweeney Todd has a barber shop upstairs from the pie shop. He starts to kill his clients initially to get revenge on the people that did him wrong but in the process he becomes psychopathic and kills anyone. The bodies of the clients end up downstairs in Mrs Lovett’s meat pies. And so it goes until the denouement.
